Born in 1997 in Tbilisi, Georgia, Mariam Kvashilava is a New York–based painter whose practice draws from cultural memory, personal narrative, and material-driven exploration, creating a dialogue between past and present.
She was awarded the NCN full scholarship to study in the United Kingdom and earned her BFA with honors in Art History and Archaeology from Sorbonne University in Paris. She recently completed her MFA at the New York Academy of Art.
Kvashilava’s work is a contemplative investigation into time, space, and identity, where painting functions less as depiction and more as resonance. Through layered surfaces and intuitive mark-making, her compositions invite engagement with the invisible forces shaping both collective and individual experience.
Rooted in personal and collective histories, her practice reflects a life shaped by displacement—having left her home country alone at fifteen and lived across multiple countries by early adulthood. Attentive to patterns in how identity is formed, particularly in women’s lives, she explores what is spoken, what remains unspoken, and the emotional inheritances passed quietly through generations.
Through textured, multidisciplinary compositions, Kvashilava gives form to emotional memory, embodied language, and shifting narratives of belonging. Her works unfold as composites of internal and external realities, guided by intention, intuition, and an ongoing dialogue with the materials themselves.
